30 July, Friendly, Home, Aston Manor 4th

The season’s final game in the Church Road sunshine saw the Over 40s take on an Aston Manor 4th team including junior players having since progressed to 3rd and 2nd teams. The 40s lost their first wicket to the second ball, when Kieron Carroll’s pace had John Pigott caught behind. Andy Betty, making his Over 40s debut, retired on 32 after the maximum 8 overs per 40’s batsman, and Austen Imber retired on 63 an over later. After Alex Rose bowled Ian Bosworth, Nick Farrell hit 23 and Simon Bowen retired on 47. Carroll bowled David Bond for 13, for Wayne Turner’s 5 not out and Saj Amir’s 4 not out to take the 40’s score to 207-3 from 20 overs.

The 4th team lost their first wicket in the third over when Liam Rake was caught and bowled by Amir for 20. Reece Fletcher retired on 27 and James Bemand retired on 38, both after the maximum six overs per 4th’s batting. Mark Christian was stumped by Bowen off Trent Turner for 8, and Nick Farrell then bowled Avon Turner for 9, with Antony Rose retiring on 9. Bowling also by Martin Rose, Pigott, Bond and Farrell kept the 4ths behind the run rate, and with five overs remaining, 68 runs were needed. Alex Rose pushed the score on quickly before retiring on 37, and Rees Murray’s hard hitting 33 ended with another Bowen stumping off Turner. Kieran Carroll, 3 not out, and Ronan Sheehan, 7 not out, took the 4th’s score to 199-4 in a 400 run game which could have gone either way in the final over.
