Manor lose 100% record at Nuneaton

19 June Aston Manor Over 40s v Nuneaton Over 40s Warwickshire Over 40s League Away

Batting first, Aston Manor saw off the initial eight overs of excellent out-swing bowling from the pavilion end, and tidy support from the railway end. Chris Wooding hit five fours and a six in his 34, before falling to Nuneaton’s first change slow spinner.

The host’s similar four further bowlers continued to tease with accuracy yet lack of pace on a slow wicket, and the Aston Manor batsmen struggled to match the run rate seen in previous games. Simon Bowen did though later begin to dominate, and reached 42 before caught attempting his third six.

The final total of 117 all out with one ball of the innings remaining left Nuneaton with a seemingly straightforward victory, expecting to capitalise on the quick outfield and modest boundaries. The match soon though became a contest as opening bowler Martin Rose claimed three wickets for 20 in his four overs, supported by Geoff Knowles’ early strike. After David Woakes’ claimed the first of his two wickets, Nuneaton were five down, needing a further 70 runs.

Stronger Nuneaton batsmen then began to hit boundaries, and take the game away despite the fall of further wickets, including a sharp run out from John Page, a running catch from Ken Wooding and a further wicket by Saj Amir. Nuneaton reached 118-8 with an over remaining. An exceptional wicket keeping performance by Chris Wooding included three catches standing up to medium pace.

The first league loss did not dent the outstanding team spirit, which will serve the Over 40s well in the remaining league games away at Walmley on 26 June and Elford on 2 July.
