League season kicks off with win

5th June
Aston Manor Over 40s v Water Orton Over 40s
Warwickshire Over 40s League Home

After being put into bat in cloudy conditions, Water Orton batted steadily through their 20 overs. Opening bowler Tony Heaney first struck, and Geoff Knowles later picked up a wicket in his second two-over spell which conceded only four runs.

Steve Knowles tidy four overs at the end of the innings, similar pressure applied in Saj Samirs four overs and Austen Imbers 2-8 off four overs limited Water Orton to 108-5. Sharp close fielding restricted singles, and boundaries were patrolled effectively, with Ian Hudson taking a key run out.

In reply, opener Ian Bosworth hit a quick 16, but the scoring rate slowed and the game became more evenly balanced. John Pages 9 and Chris Woodings 22 were followed by Ian Hudsons initially patient but later more assertive 38.

Hudsons departure with two overs remaining and four runs needed brought Ken Wooding to the crease. Four dot balls resulted from tight bowling and all fielders saving the single, although a wide pushed the score along. The pressure appeared on, but Wooding then drove a four back past the bowler to ensure a six wicket victory at 110-4 with an over remaining.

The win was especially rewarding, perfectly fitting participation policy with only the five bowlers bowling and the six batsmen batting.

On 12 June, Aston Manor host Four Oaks in the second league game, 6.30pm start.
