Solid Start by the 2nds

After a spirited performance last time out to gain a losing draw against Penn CC, Manor were victorious in their first home game of the season against Whitchurch by 4 wickets.

In swing friendly conditions new captain Dom Ashton won the toss and opted to bowl first and was rewarded by a fantastic display by the seam bowling quartet with Rick Bassi (2-35), Shaun Carroll (2-29), Abdur Rahim (2-17) and Scott Bryson (2-14), all bowling with superb control, beating both edges on numerous occasions, leaving the opposition reeling at 70-7. However the tail wagged briefly with some aggressive hitting scoring 52 off 8 overs against the spinners which was only halted when Bryson took a fantastic catch on the boundary, leaving Manor to chase 144 off 53 overs. Manor were indebted to some excellent fielding throughout which meant that they were able to keep pressure on the batsmen at all times with a special mention to Adam Nevitt making his debut behind the stumps who kept soundly.

In reply the top order comfortably reached 70-1 with solid contributions from Rahim (24) and Moeen (23). However the rain came and after a long delay Manor quickly lost 2 wickets in an over, before being forced off again due to the weather. This meant that the winning draw had been reached if 25 overs were bowled. When the batsmen returned to the field the match was reduced to 28 overs and 50 runs were required from the last 8 overs to win the game. Shaz Yoosuf ‘s aggressive knock (35*) along with Ashton (8*) saw Manor home with one over remaining giving them a well deserved victory and 20 valuable points.
