High scoring affair

2nd XI
Birmingham League Division Two (South)
Stratford 337-7
Aston Manor 289-7

The Church Road wicket yet again proved to be a batting paradise in this high scoring encounter.

The visitors impressive total of 337-7 was based on a superb unbeaten double century from Jake Salmon (208no). This was a real quality innings, but Salmon did receive considerable assistance from a dreadful Manor fielding performance. Easy catches were dropped and the ground fielding was equally poor. Manor’s opening attack of Shaun Carroll (2-44) and Sahal Malvernkar (2-48) were definitely the pick of the bowlers with off spinner and captain Trent Turner (2-79) and Avon Turner (1-44) picking up the other wickets.

With their batting form this season Manor would have had a reasonable amount of confidence in chasing down this total. However, the loss of both openers early put any such hopes on the back foot. Sahal Malvernkar (136) and Adam Nevitt (87) were again in great touch with a tremendous third wicket partnership which ensured Manor would not get beaten even if they couldn’t quite set up a victory chase. Nevitt continued with his return to form, whilst the talented Malvernkar made up for dropping Salmon with a cultured knock of his own with runs scored all around the wicket. A special mention should also go to Stratford bowler Tom Whitting, who returned bowling figures of 5-36, which was quite remarkable on such a flat surface.
