2nds Win Thriller

Aston Manor 2nd XI continued their excellent unbeaten start to the season thanks to another stunning bowling & fielding display away at Milford Hall.

Having won the toss skipper Steve Knowles, with one eye on the weather, elected to bat first. This decision looked to have backfired when, thanks to what turned out to be a virtually unplayable wicket, Manor found themselves in serious trouble at 38-5. However a mature innings from 15 year old Nabeel Asghar (31), which was superbly matched by Shahid Kureshi (31), eventually allowed The Squirrels to post a challenging total of 122.

In response Milford Hall soon found themselves in a bit of trouble of their own. A hostile opening spell from Ricky Bassi (3-42), which included a caught & bowled with the very first ball of the innings, saw the hosts reduced to 38-3. However a good partnership of 49 between Ivan Blount (33) and Pat Turner (28) saw the score move on to 86-3, and with only 37 runs required and 7 wickets in hand the game seemed lost.

However, a burst of 4 wickets in 3 overs saw the game turned on it’s head yet again as the Manor suddenly scented an unlikely victory. First Abdul Rahim had the dangerous Blount caught at silly mid-off with another delivery that reared up from a good length. Then in the next over Pat Turner was run out, before Pennington was cleaned bowled with the very next delivery from Steve Knowles (1-19) and when Rahim had Young caught in the subsequent over Milford Hall had gone from 86-3 to 90-7. The Manor bowlers then put the lower order under severe pressure making full use of the still lively wicket, and eventually bowled out their hosts for 104 with a run out securing the victory. A stunning burst of 3-10 from 6 overs from Abdul Rahim proved to be the match winner, whilst Adam Rana took three stunning catches at silly mid-off to support a great team bowling performance.

Their latest victory sees Manor climb to second in the table, and with a couple of key players still to return this could prove to be a good season.
