2nds lose top of the table clash

2nd XI
Birmingham League Division Two
Aston Manor 194
Smethwick 195-4
SMETHWICK WIN BY 6 WICKETS

With most Birmingham League fixtures falling victim to the weather it took a tremendous effort by the players arriving early at Church Road to get this top of the table fixture with Smethwick played. Unfortunately for the team, the sterling efforts put in resulted in their first defeat on the season.

Perhaps for the first time the inexperience of Manors young side was exposed by a much more mature team.

The visitors won a very important toss and asked the hosts to bat first on a difficult and damp surface. However, openers Andrew Forman (28) and Trent Turner (21) both applied themselves admirably against the swinging and seaming ball to give Manor a solid foundation which was built on during a fine and aggressive partnership between Steve Evans (44) and Shozab Haider (19).  A middle order collapse saw the hosts fall from 130-3 to 135-6 before Jason Furnell (22) and Adam Nevitt (22) both batted sensibly to allow Manor to recover to a respectable total of 194 all out.

Sadly, due to illness, injury and holiday, Manor were missing three of their usual regular four seam bowlers and Smethwicks strong batting line up  took full advantage. In his first bowl of the season Adam Morris (1-26) grabbed an early wicket but the vastly experienced duo of Amjad Kayani (84) and Kamran Zaman (80) always looked in control of the situation in an impressive match winning partnership. Shaun Carroll (2-42) came back to get some reward for his fine opening spell and Steve Evans (1-24) also had some success but it was too little too late as the visitors cruised to victory taking top spot from Manor at the half way stage of the season.
