2nds end up 1 wicket short

Aston Manor 2nd XI travelled to Shropshire to take on Worfield CC, but despite an excellent all round team performance they couldn’t quite come away with the win their play thoroughly deserved.

After winning the toss Manor elected to bat, and after some good early bowling from Worfield on a lively pitch, they lost 3 early wickets to leave them in trouble at 40-3. However as the pitch started to calm down Manors explosive middle order took charge, with Abdul Rahim holding the innings together with a calm 78. He was excellently supported by a hard hitting 44 from Austen Imber, 47 from talented youngster Zayn Hussain and a run-a-ball 56 not out from Trent Turner, finishing with a daunting score of 294-8.

In response an early wicket each from Kieran Carroll and captain Steve Knowles had Worfield in trouble at 10-2, before a solid partnership between Worfield skipper Piers Rouwenhorst (50) and youngster Harvey Sage (36) saw them to 97-2 at the half way point. However, straight after the drinks break Worfield lost 3 wickets in 3 overs to Kieran Carroll and Trent Turner to leave the game finely balanced. Despite wickets then falling at regular intervals, including two stunning slip catches from Austen Imber, Worfield ended on 220-9 to deny Aston Manor what would have been a very well deserved victory. Kieran Carroll finished with the excellent figures of 4-48 and was well supported by brother Shaun Carroll (2-48), with Avon Turner, Trent Turner and Steve Knowles finishing with a wicket a piece.
