Water Orton Lose From Winning Position

Another large Church Road crowd were treated to an exciting spectacle as Aston Manor 1st XI got back to winning ways with a tense victory against Water Orton.

After being asked to bat first, the hosts were rocked by the loss of two early wickets on a track that offered good assistance to the bowlers. Christi Viljoen (58) anchored the innings with a patient and cultured knock, receiving fine support from both Imran Jamiel (34) and the impressive Andrew Forman (36) as Manor looked to build a competitive total. However, it took a belligerent last wicket stand between stand in skipper Jason Furnell (19no) and debutant Deepak Chabbra (16) too see the hosts finish on a competitive 203 before being bowled out in the last over. Khan (4-34) was the pick of the visitor’s bowlers.

Despite some accurate bowling and a couple of early wickets Manor struggled to make any great in roads into the Water Orton batting line up. Several difficult catches were spilled and both Bedford (56) and Louw (42) took full advantage to put the visitors in sight of victory at 172-4 with 9 overs still remaining. The game was turned when the excellent Shozab Haider (5-62) dismissed Louw with a superb caught and bowled, and then in tandem with the express pace of Viljoen (4-40) ripped through the remainder of the batting order to dismiss their opponents for 191, after they lost their last 6 wickets for only 19 runs.

Yet again the young Manor side showed tremendous team spirit and determination which will hold them in good stead for the remainder of what was always going to be a difficult season having lost so many players during the winter.
