So Close Vs Sutton

Aston Manor were unable to stretch their recent good run of good results, as a poor performance in the field saw them lose a close game against bottom of the table Sutton Coldfield in front of a large crowd at Rectory Road.

On a slow and low wicket, Manors early innings was built around a cultured and patient knock by Chris Whittock (47) together with some explosive hitting by Peter Evans (28). Suttons off spinner Andy Stevenson (4-34) put a brake on proceedings, but a fine partnership between Shozab Haider (38) and Andrew Forman (28) pushed the visitors total to a very competitive 221 before they were finally bowled out.

Matt Parker (34) got Sutton off to a good start, but Manor appeared to be in control of proceedings until a well constructed partnership between Mike Dean (55) and Paul Ellesmore (66) gave the home side the advantage. With Manors bowling resources stretched together with an unusually poor fielding performance, there was little assistance offered to Christi Viljoen (2-42) who bowled with great heart and aggression. Skipper Peter Evans turned to his own part time off spin to try and rescue the match and after dismissing both Dean and Ellesmore in a fine spell of 3-29 set up a tense finish with the hosts scrambling to a 2 wicket victory with an over to spare.
