Return To Winning Ways Against Tamworth

AMCC 1st XI vs Tamworth
Saturday 22nd May
Church Road

On a baking day at Church Road, skipper Evans won the toss and chose to field against the wishes of certain players!! This tactic initially paid off with the visitors reduced to 2-2 and then 23-3. However a fantastic middle order century partnership between captain Stuart Burrows (75) and Nick Breakspeare (46) rebuilt the innings. A huge score on a hard and flat track was on the cards until Darren Baker was brought on and quickly nipped out the pair and his partnership breaking and potentially match winning spell yielding 2-33. The lions share of the overs were bowled by the increasingly impressive Arfan Khan (4-34) and Ryan Van Niekerk (1-39) as Tamworth we bowled out for 229 in the 50th over.

This left the Squirrels with 60 overs to chase down 230, and a grinding effort would be required to eradicate last weeks woeful batting display at Whitchurch. With this is mind…the second ball of the innings was smashed for 6 by opener Darren Baker, who fired his way to a quick fire 30 and similarly skipper Peter Evans carried on with the attack hitting 29 off 17 balls before taking one risk too many. With the score on 90-3 off just 12 overs, Chris Whittock initially steadied the ship with 28 before holing out in the deep and Manor looked in trouble with 115 still to get but with only 5 wickets remaining. Overseas star Van Niekerk stepped up to the plate, ably supported by the experienced Jason Furnell with a run a ball 25. Van Niekerk steered home the Squirrels finishing on 54*, supported by some sensible late batting by 2009 player of the year Shozab Haider (24*), a 3 wicket victory and a vital 20 points were claimed to set up the Bank Holiday weekends fixtures against the strong Water Orton and Shropshire’s St Georges.
