Pressure is on the Manor

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Cannock 252-5
Aston Manor 193 all out
Cannock won by 57 runs

This defeat away at Cannock saw Manor slip into the final relegation place and leaves them having to win their final two games against bottom of the table Evesham and resurgent Milford Hall to be mathematically safe from dropping back down into the Warwickshire League.

On a slow wicket which offered very little help to Manor’s feared seam attack Cannock were able to post a formidable total of 252-5 from their 50 overs due to some fine batting from Wiltshire’s Edward Kilbee (67), Tegan Naidoo (64) and Carl Whyte (53). Manor’s spinners, Armadeep Sonkar and Peter Evans, each grabbed two wickets but the bowlers were not well supported in the field. Numerous catches were dropped and the visitors ground fielding was at best pedestrian as the hosts added a match turning 90 runs from the last ten overs.

Manor lost early wickets to be reduced to 38-3, but a sensible and fine 85 run partnership between Shozab Haider (65) and Jake Lee (39) brought the visitors back in contention. It was always going to be difficult to increase the run rate on a dusty dry wicket perfectly suited to the hosts gentle but accurate attack, and as Manor tried, then wickets tumbled with the visitors finally dismissed 57 runs short with six overs still remaining.

Throughout the season lack of runs has been Manor’s Achilles heel, but on this occasion it was their very poor fielding which cost them dearly.
