Poor Form Continues

1st XI
Birmingham League Division 3
Whitchurch 159-8
Aston Manor 126-9

Aston Manor’s run of poor results continued as they ended up having to bat out for a draw away against bottom of the table Whitchurch having earlier got themselves into a strong position to win the game.

Impressive new ball bowling by Imran Khan (2-33) and Arslan Shahid contributed to the hosts finding batting difficult as they slumped to 6-3 and then 67-5. However, despite Phillip DeFreitas (2-26) and Junior Johnson (2-26) keeping the pressure on with tight and accurate bowling, a splendid innings from Alex Huxley (83no) saw Whitchurch recover to finish on 159-8 from their allotted overs.

Although Manor lost three early wickets in the face of some tremendous bowling from their ex player Amjad AliKhan (4-35) a solid partnership between Tom Caulfield (47) and Phillip DeFreitas (27) seemed to set up an inevitable victory as the visitors reached 100-3 with both batsmen looking in complete control. Four quick LBW decisions contributed to an alarming slump as 6 wickets fell for only 22 runs, and it was left to Russell Guy and Arslan Shahid to bat out the remaining 4 overs to secure a very disappointing draw.

Yet again Manor were guilty of trying to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory, and next week they face table topping Fordhouses without their talisman Phillip deFreitas who picked up an unfortunate injury.
