Opportunity Missed To Move Away From Relegation Battle

1st XI Birmingham League Division Two
Tamworth 227-6
Aston Manor 190-8

Aston Manor missed the opportunity to move away from the relegation battle as Tamworth had the better of a drawn away match on Saturday.

A fine innings from Neil Orton (96) was the mainstay of Tamworths total, but he and his colleagues were assisted by several dropped catches and sloppy ground fielding from the depleted Manor side. Ryan van Nierkerk (3-54) was the pick of the bowlers with the other wickets being taken by 16 year old Nabeel Asghar sponsored by RK-SIPS Design Limited (2-54) and Arfan Khan (1-65). There was also a really encouraging spell from 14 year old Brinda Phagura (6-1-17-0) who looks a very exciting prospect for the future.

Manors reply was built around a quality innings from 17 year old Warwickshire prospect Chris Whittock sponsored by Synergy Insurance Services (88no) who batted with great style and composure throughout. He formed useful partnerships with Andrew Forman sponsored by Jackson Calvert Chartered Accountants (23), Ryan van Nierkerk (18) and Rikki Bassi (16) but each time it looked as though it may turn into a match winning stand it was halted by veteran Mick Nield (4-45) who gave a great display of left arm spin bowling. Nields excellence made sure Manor were always behind the required rate and after wickets fell to some late suicidal batting it was left to another 17 year old Trent Turner to restore order and play out the last two overs with great composure to secure the draw.
