Match abandoned against Astwood Bank

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Astwood Bank 286-9 (50 overs)
Aston Manor 73-3 (18 overs)

Heavy and persistent rain possibly came to Aston Manor’s rescue at Church Road as proceedings were halted before enough overs had been bowled in the second innings to constitute a game.

The visitors were well ahead on Duckworth Lewis, but had the game been able to run its full course the strength in depth of Manor’s batting line up may well have set up a close and exciting finish.

The Church Road track was definitely more bowler friendly than usual and this made Manor’s effort with the ball and in the field so disappointing. From the outset the hosts lacked the required spark and energy and were punished by a superb innings by Stephen Adshead (83), who received good support from Tom Pedley (72) as the visitors posted a challenging total of 286-9. With the exception of in form leg spinner Shaun Findlay (5-64), Manor were well below par with the ball although the bowlers were not helped by some sloppy ground fielding and a couple of dropped catches.

In reply Manor lost early wickets which put them well behind on Duckworth Lewis. Russell Guy (26no) battled with determination from the outset, and his partnership with South African Byron Wyngard (14no) was just beginning to flourish when the persistent rain became too heavy to continue.

A full and honest discussion took place behind the closed doors of the changing room after the game, and it was made perfectly clear by the captain and coaching staff what is required if a serious promotion bid is to be launched.
