Manors season ends in disappointment

Birmingham League Division Three
1st XI
Bridgnorth 252 all out
Aston Manor 241 all out
BRIDGNORTH WON BY 11 RUNS

Manors season ended in disappointment as defeat at Church Road ended their promotion dreams and confined them to another season in Division Three. This narrow defeat saw Manor slip from 2nd in the league to 5th, but another 12 runs and victory would have seen them promoted as Champions! How thin the line between success and failure?

Bridgnorth took full advantage of their decision to bat first before being finally bowled out for 252 with the Shropshire duo of James Ralph (75) and Jono Whitney (58) being their main contributors. Manors bowling was not up to its normal high standard, but it did certainly appear that lady luck had deserted them when they most needed it! Armadeep Sonkar (4-74) was the pick of the attack with Brinder Phaghura (3-47), Nabeel Asghar (2-40) and Aurell Kirnon (1-44) being the other wicket takers.

Manors reply got off to the worst possible start which saw them reduced to 61-5 in the face of some fine bowling from Sam Weaver (4-64). Throughout the season Manors lower order batsmen have shown great resilience, and once again they came to the fore. A good partnership between Armadeep Sonkar (70) and skipper Jason Furnell (55) clawed Manor back into the match, and after the Indians dismissal the captain got good support from both Andrew Forman (21) and Arfan Khan (26no) as the hosts edged closer toward victory and promotion. Unfortunately with 12 runs still needed Mickey Bromhall was run out, his first dismissal of the season, and Manor fell agonisingly short of their total. A bitter pill to swallow, but in reality Manors form has been far too inconsistent throughout the season. Manor lost more games than anyone outside the relegated sides, but won more games than anyone in the League! Roll on next season!
