Manors disappointing form continues

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Aston Manor 116 all out
Eastnor 117-6
EASTNOR WON BY 4 WICKETS

Manor’s disappointing form continued with a defeat against their Shropshire opponents under the shadow of majestic Eastnor Castle.

Overnight rain made conditions difficult and with the exception of Phillip deFreitas the Manor batsmen could not cope with the excellent bowling of Shahid Ahmed (6-16). Ahmed tore through the visitors top order reducing them to 62-8 at one stage. Tail ender James Harris showed great determination to stay with deFreitas as they managed to see Manor scramble through to a total of 116. The fact that deFreitas finished on 65 not out and no other batsman reached double figures tells its own story! The ex England man was quite superb in trying conditions, but unfortunately none of the other batsmen were able to give him the support he needed.

However, any thought that the hosts would just stroll to a comfortable victory were dismissed by an equally impressive spell of quick bowling from Manor’s Arshlan Shahid who finished with match figures of 4-36. Shahid had been instrumental in reducing Eastnor to 55-5, when in the last over before tea he unfortunately failed to hold on to a sharp chance which would have dismissed star batsman Josh Emery and left the hosts facing an uphill task. As the wicket dried and improved Emery made the most of his good fortune to finish on 40 not out and see Eastnor through to victory. Phillip deFreitas 1-18 and Shaun Findlay 1-30 were the other wicket takers. Certainly there was no questioning Manor’s attitude and approach to this match, but ultimately they were unable to cope with some outstanding new ball bowling.
