Manor start with a loss at Tamworth

1st Xi
Birmingham League Division Three
Tamworth 278-5
Aston Manor 152 all out
Tamworth win by 126 runs

Although an under strength Manor team could argue that they endured by far the worst of the conditions, they were nevertheless well beaten in their opening league encounter against a very strong Tamworth side who lived up to their pre-season billing as one of the favourites for promotion.

Manors opening bowlers beat the outside edge on numerous occasions but could not get the important breakthrough as ex Worcester youngster Jack Manuel (48) and Aussie Michael Talbot (32) set an impressive platform for the hosts. Shropshires Stuart Burrows (68) and Ben Maddox (45no) took full advantage as Manor struggled in the wet and damp conditions leaving Tamworth to accelerate to an imposing total of 278-5 from their 50 overs. Armadeep Sonkar (1-25) was the pick of Manors bowlers in a disappointing performance in the field.

Another of Tamworths Aussie recruits, Wayne Giblin (4-42), soon made inroads into Manors batting line up with some fine left arm seam bowling. Nabeel Asghar (22) and Sonkar (20) offered some limited resistance before a partnership between Sukhjit Singh (32) and Arfan Khan (20) at least gave Manors final total of 152 some respectability.

Overall this was a well below par performance against a very good side, and major improvements will be needed for next Saturdays home fixture with Bridgnorth.
