Manor Slump to Defeat at Whitchurch

Birmingham League Division Two
Whitchurch 170 all out
Aston Manor 124 all out
Whitchurch won by 46 runs

Manor slumped to a disappointing defeat away at Whitchurch in a match which they had held the upper hand for long periods.

The visitors opening bowling attack was again impressive as Arfan Khan (4-47) and Julius Benjamin (2-41) had the hosts reeling at 82-5, before Whitchurch recovered through a good partnership between Aqsad Ali (43) and Ali Awan (35). Manors two spinners, Kyle Schreuder (3-45) and Nabeel Asghar (1-34) both also performed admirably to finally dismiss the Shropshire side for 170.

Manors reply got off to a fine start through openers Nabeel Asghar (31) and Jamie Johnson (26) as they reached 63-0. With play being interrupted by consistent rain showers Manor were always aware that they needed to remain ahead of the required run rate in the search of bonus points. Unfortunately, this mind set led to several inappropriate shots being played, and the ensuing batting collapse which followed saw Manor bowled out for a disappointing 124 in a match they really should have won. After the opening stand only Jason Furnell (17) and Peter Evans (14) got into double figures against some fine spin bowling from ex Smethwick star Aqsad Ali (5-23).

Next week Manor return to Church Road to face Bridgnorth and will be looking for a positive response to this set back.
