Manor slump to 85 run defeat

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Streetly 209-8
Aston Manor 124 all out
Streetly won by 85 runs

A poor batting display saw Manor slump to a disappointing defeat at Church Road against a Streetly side brimming with confidence following their fine start to the season.

After winning what turned out to be an important toss, the visitors batted first and were indebted to an excellent opening partnership between Craig Moore (70) and Carl Griffin (43) to set the platform for a match winning total. On a wearing wicket Manors spin duo of Armadeep Sonkar (2-23) and Nabeel Asghar (2-35) clawed the hosts back into contention, but wickets in hand meant that Streetly were able to accelerate their innings when the seam bowlers returned and finish with a competitive total of 209-8 from their 50 overs.

Only Nabeel Asghar (46) of Manors top order showed the required application to bat on a difficult track, as his colleagues proceeded to lose their wickets with some highly irresponsible shot selection. When Streetlys spinners were introduced, Shaun Findlay (4-33) and Anup Revandkar (2-20) used the favourable conditions expertly and with the exaggerated turn and bounce available made life very difficult for Manors middle and lower order as the hosts slumped to 124 all out after being 60-1 at one stage.

Despite being well beaten Manor can take positives from their performance in the field, but if they are to improve their consistency then more patience must be shown with the bat, as perfectly illustrated by Streetlys solid and successful opening partnership.

If these lessons can be learned and adhered to then there is no reason why this talented group of players could not launch another charge for promotion. However, if the bad habits continue then a relegation battle may well be looming. Manor are approaching a crossroads in the season and they must decide which path they want to follow.
