Manor Record Much Needed Victory

Birmingham League Division Two
Aston Manor 215 all out
Ombersley 138 all out
ASTON MANOR WIN BY 77 RUNS

A very young Manor side produced a superb performance to earn a much needed win and move the club into a more comfortable League position at the half way stage of the season.

Against the hostile and impressive opening attack of Ted Bayliss and Duncan Catterall, Jason Furnell (48) anchored the innings with a great display of guts and determination. He took repeated blows to the body, but stood firm in a fine partnership with young Warwickshire prospect Chris Whittock (29) sponsored by Synergy Insurance Services, before some excellent spin bowling by Matt Rawnsley (5-53) saw the visitors reduced to 120-5. However, South African Ryan van Nierkerk (69) continued his fine form with the bat and with good assistance from skipper Peter Evans (19) sponsored by CKW Distribution Ltd and Arfan Khan (16) saw Manor finally dismissed for a competitive total of 215 against a very strong bowling line up.

In reply both Van Nierkerk (11-4-20-2) and Khan (13-4-42-3) produced excellent spells with the new ball to have Ombersley struggling at 64-5. Shozab Haider (1-13) sponsored by ODC Future Thinking also chipped in with a wicket but it was another 16 year old County prospect Nabeel Asghar (7-0-22-4) sponsored by RK-SIPS Design Limited who removed danger man Joey Robinson (60) in a great spell of spin bowling to see Manor through to a vital win. Furnell again showed his commitment with two good catches at short leg, and a special mention also to Adam Rana and 14 year old Brinda Phagura who both were introduced to the team at late notice and performed admirably in the field.

The Squirrels will hope to take this form forward into their next match against Bridgnorth at Church Road on Saturday.
