Manor move top

Warwickshire Premier League
1st XI
Aston Manor 221-9 (37)
Nuneaton 94 all out (22.3)

Aston Manor moved back to the top of the Warwickshire Premier League with a superb performance against Nuneaton at Church Road.

In a match reduced to 37 overs per team, skipper Jason Furnell lost an important toss and Manor were quite understandably asked to bat first.

Following his morale boosting half century last week, opener Tom Caulfield followed this up with an excellent innings of 91 and was the backbone for a fine Manor batting performance. Peter Evans continued his run of good form with an aggressive 43 before Imran Khan provided the icing on the cake with a destructive knock of 56 from only 27 balls to post an imposing total of 221-9.

Having only 37 overs to bowl the opposition out to win the game appeared to be a major problem. However, Manor’s bowlers had not read the script and produced an exhilarating performance to skittle Nuneaton out within 23 overs. Imran Khan (3-33) and Arfan Khan (1-20) gave the hosts the early breakthrough they needed and the pressure was well maintained by leg spinner Shaun Findlay (2-32). The star performance though was reserved for debutant Masood Iqbal who in 3.3 overs of genuine pace ripped through the Nuneaton lower order taking 4 wickets for only 5 runs to see Manor through to an impressive and important victory.

Unfortunately the 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI fixtures were lost to the weather, but the club are now in pole position to ensure a quick return to the Birmingham League.
