Manor lose to bottom club Fillongley

Warwickshire Premier League
1st XI
Aston Manor 121 all out
Fillongley 122-8

The beauty of sport is that nothing is predictable and that certainly proved to be the case in this meeting between table topping Aston Manor and bottom club Fillongley.

After being asked to bat first on a damp wicket Manor struggled from the outset against the gentle seam and swing bowling of Andy Moore (5-38) and Daud Syed (4-48) to be dismissed for a well below par total of 121. Both bowlers utilised the helpful conditions perfectly as Manor found it difficult to get any momentum into their batting. Conditions dictated that this would always be a low scoring affair but Manor would still have been very disappointed with their efforts especially with the dangerous Imran Khan left stranded at the end on 23 not out.

To defend such a low total, the main criteria is to take early wickets and hold onto your chances. Unfortunately, Manor managed neither. The backbone of the hosts reply was an unbeaten 58 from opener Chris Moore, but he was put down twice. The likelihood is that had either opportunity been taken then Manor would have gone on to win the match. An opening stand of 39 also put Fillongley into a strong position before Manors young exciting quick bowling prospect, Kieran Carroll, ripped through the hosts middle order returning figures of 5-31. He was well supported by Imran Khan (2-20) but Manor had left themselves too much to do as Fillongley nervously reached their total with two wickets remaining.

Manor’s cushion at the top of the table has now been reduced to 11 points, but victory in both of their last two fixtures against Handsworth and Olton will still guarantee promotion.

It is now, however, much more in the balance than it should have been!
