Manor lose against Tamworth

Birmingham League Division Three

TAMWORTH WIN BY 4 WICKETS

After two successive victories Manor were brought back down to earth with a 4 wicket defeat at Church Road against Tamworth in a game of many twists and turns. Having been asked to bat first in difficult conditions Manor soon found themselves in serious trouble at 80-9. Their demise was down not only to fine bowling by Mike Talbot (5-39) and fellow Aussie Wayne Giblin (4-53), but by some very poor shot selection and lack of patience from the batsmen. Any theory that the surface was unplayable was however dismissed by an excellent last wicket partnership between the experienced duo of Aurell Kirnon (40) and Michael Bromhall (14no). Both batted with the required application and saw Manor through to a total of 141, which although well below par, gave the hosts a glimmer of victory.

Unfortunately, despite Kirnon grabbing an early wicket, Manor did not start well with the ball as the visitors cruised to 52-1. Amardeep Sonkar then removed dangerman Talbot (35) with a superb delivery before young 16 year old Brinder Phaghura turned the game on its head with an astonishing spell of four wickets in four balls which saw the visitors reeling at

52-6. The youngster was magnificent in his control of swing and seam in a wonderful spell of 4-15 in seven overs. Unfortunately, ECB regulations on young fast bowlers meant that he had to be withdrawn from the attack, and despite some probing spin bowling by Sonkar, a fine partnership developed between the impressive Minor Counties player Stuart Burrows (57no) and James Gray (25no) to see the visitors through to a four wicket victory in an enthralling encounter.
