Rugby 231 all out
Aston Manor 213 all out

Aston Manor’s mini revival was stalled away at Rugby as they fell to a narrow defeat in a game they really should have won.

Manor put down six fairly straight forward catches as the hosts were ultimately able to post a competitive total to be able to defend.

Excellent new ball bowling from Clement Smith (5-78) together with the steady Shaun Carroll (1-15) saw Rugby in serious early trouble but fine batting by Owen Edwards (58) and Henry Wilkins (48) along with Manor’s poor catching saw the hosts post a mini revival to reach 168-8. Manor were again guilty of letting their opponents off the hook as some strong late hitting by Lee Golding (48) saw Rugby finally reach 231 before being bowled out. Junior Johnson (2-20) and Recordo Gordon (1-50) were the other wicket takers.

In reply Recordo Gordon decided the best policy was all out attack, and his aggression was richly rewarded as he smashed 103 from only 72 balls including ten fours and five sixes. The problem was that the rest of the Manor batsmen tried to copy his approach with no success at all. At one stage Manor had slumped to 96-7 with Gordon 78 not out! It was only when Adam Nevitt came to the crease that Gordon received any support and Manor were able to put together a meaningful partnership. Once Gordon had finally been dismissed for his excellent century Nevitt (70no) battled on with the tail to try and see the visitors through to success. It was a splendid effort by the youngster playing his first game since returning from University, but it was ultimately in vain. A defeat very much down to dreadful catching and irresponsible batting.
