Manor hold on for draw against high flying Whitchurch

1st XI Birmingham League Division Two
Whitchurch 258-9
Aston Manor 210-8

Manor produced a stubborn performance to hold on for a well earned draw against high flying Whitchurch at Church Road on Saturday. The visitors got off to a blistering start through Shropshires Richard Oliver (61), but once he was dismissed by the impressive 15 year old Brinda Phagura (1-16) Manor managed to get themselves back into the match. Spinners Nabeel Asghar (3-77) and Peter Evans (2-58) bowled well in tandem but some late good hitting by Asquad Ali (54) and Ewan Jones (49 no) saw Whitchurch close on 258-9 from their 55 overs.

With Kyle Schreuder (82) again looking imperious Manor looked well set at 97-1 from only 20 overs, before a major batting collapse saw them slump to 140-8 by the 30 over mark. Richard Oliver (5-56) was the main destroyer as the visitors looked to improve their chances of promotion. With Manor equally desperate for points at the other end of the table the experienced Jason Furnell (45no) and youngster Brinda Phagura (24no) showed tremendous application, concentration and technique to bat out the remaining 25 overs and frustrate the visitors in a 70 run partnership to close on 210-8.Manor face a tough trip to Bridgnorth next week, but hopefully the spirit showed by those two can be used as a platform for an upturn in results to drag the club away from the relegation battle.
