Manor frustrated by the weather

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Aston Manor 243-9 (55 overs)
Newport 146-7 (32 overs)

Not for the first time this season Aston Manor were frustrated by the weather as they had to settle for a draw in their encounter with Newport at Church Road.

Despite a bright and breezy innings from the evergreen Jason Furnell (32), Manor found themselves struggling at 67-4 before a splendid partnership between Byron Wyngard (58) and Phillip deFreitas (36) heralded a strong comeback from the hosts. The class of deFreitas was obvious, but this was a very important innings for the clubs South African overseas player Wyngard. Despite a strong pedigree in his native land he had struggled for runs so far this season, but finally he was able to display his undoubted talent which will hopefully kick start his season for the Perry Barr based team. George Findlay (56no) continued the good work with splendid innings scattered with quality stroke play as Manor closed on 243-9 from their full allocation of 55 overs.

Unfortunately a very heavy rain shower had restricted Newport’s reply to only 32 overs and Duckworth Lewis had given them a total of 175 to achieve a winning draw.

Once IPL professional Rajat Bhatia (42) and Jamie Prew (39) had been dismissed that total never looked achievable against some impressive Manor bowling and fielding. Manor switched their bowlers regularly to prevent the visiting batsmen settling and the wickets were shared between the impressive Shaun Findlay (3-30), George Findlay (2-27), Trent Turner (1-10) and Shozab Haider (1-13).

Overall this was another encouraging performance from Manor, but they desperately need to turn these performances into victories to gain some momentum toward the expected promotion push.
