Manor fight back to record vital victory

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Aston Manor 182 all out
Worcester Nomads 127 all out
Aston Manor won by 55 runs

Aston Manor were indebted to a tremendous last wicket partnership between Michael Bromhall and Arfan Khan to help secure a vital win at Church Road against fellow strugglers Worcester Nomads.

After the early loss of both openers, Aafan Janjua (45) and Armadeep Sonkar (36) both batted well and moved the total on to 80-2, appearing to set the platform for Manor to post a competitive score. However, although both players looked set at the crease, they were dismissed in successive overs and another very disappointing batting collapse ensued. In the face of some fine bowling by Richard Henry (4-23), the hosts suddenly found themselves in serious trouble at 108-9 and staring a third successive defeat in the face. Fortunately for Manor the last wicket pair of Michael Bromhall (31no) and Arfan Khan (27) showed the required level of determination and application thus far missing to set their opponents a total of 183 to win. Although this appeared a below par score on a good batting track, it at least gave Manor a total to bowl at.

With the momentum of that last wicket partnership Manor took to the field in a positive fashion and were further inspired by a magnificent catch from skipper Jason Furnell and two superb run outs by Armadeep Sonkar. Manors bowling was disciplined throughout and maintained relentless pressure on the visitors batsmen, who finally succumbed to 127 all out, giving the hosts an ultimately comfortable victory. Aurell Kirnon, Arfan Khan and Nabeel Asghar each took two wickets in an excellent team fielding performance, but the real heroes of this Manor victory were the last wicket pairing of Bromhall and Khan.
