Manor crush Penkridge

Birmingham League Division Three
1st XI
Aston Manor 269-7
Penkridge 124 all out

Aston Manor produced by far their best performance of the season to crush promotion hopefuls Penkridge at Cannock Road. After being asked to bat first Armadeep Sonkar (49) got the visitors off to a fine start with some cultured stroke play. His good work was continued by some explosive batting from Peter Evans (45) along with solid contributions from Brinda Phaghura (37), Jason Furnell (33) and Nabeel Asghar (22). This laid the foundation for a superb late exhibition of big hitting by Aurell Kirnon who smashed 58 not out from only 22 balls allowing Manor to set an imposing target of 269-7 from their 55 overs.

The hosts made a promising start against Manors much vaunted seam attack, but the introduction of Armadeep Sonkar with his left arm spin turned the game in the visitors favour. He found turn and bounce on what had previously appeared to be a perfect batting surface to return incredible figures of 16-6-25-8. The Indian overseas player has found it difficult to adapt to English conditions during this wretched Summer, but in this match against some fine batsmen his control was first class and proved what great potential he has to be a match winner for the club. Gathering rain clouds again threatened to thwart Manor, but skipper Furnell took a brave decision to introduce part time spin bowler Peter Evans to the attack and reaped immediate dividends as he grabbed the last two wickets to see Manor through to a very impressive and well deserved victory.

This win leaves the Perry Barr side on the fringes of the promotion race, but if they can regularly reproduce the form of the last two weeks, then an immediate return to Division Two is not out of the question.
