Manor come undone by a strong Penkridge

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Penkridge 279-7
Aston Manor 137 all out
Penkridge won by 142 runs

As 50 over Cricket returned to the Birmingham League, Champions’ elect Penkridge lived up to their reputation with an excellent performance to defeat Aston Manor at Church Road.

Despite a superb spell of bowling from Aurell Kirnon (10-3-16-2), the visitors were able to amass a substantial total of 279-7 from their allotted overs. Ben Holmes (45) had given the visitors a steady start but Manor’s tight bowling gave hope to restricting their opponents to a manageable score. However, Rana Hassan (88) and Laeq Chisti (74no) batted with great style and aggression to take the game away from the hosts. Armadeep Sonkar (2-62), Peter Evans (1-27) and Arfan Khan (1-33) were Manor’s other wicket takers, with Sonkar also producing an amazing piece of fielding to run out the Penkridge skipper.

After the loss of two early wickets, Manor were always going to be heavily reliant on their Indian professional, Sonkar, if they were going to seriously challenge this total. He looked in fine form but when he was dismissed for 24 Manor’s hopes went with him. Penkridge were as equally impressive with the ball, with Attiq Chisti grabbing 4-25, but some useful late hitting from Aurell Kirnon (28) and Sukhjit Singh (23) at least gave the final total of 137 an air of respectability.

In all fairness Manor did not play particularly badly, they just came up against an exceptionally good team who were on top of their game.
