Manor catapulted back into promotion race

Birmingham League Division Three
1st XI
Coleshill 241-8
Aston Manor 243-2

Aston Manors Indian overseas player Armadeep Sonkar is a player of undoubted class, but he had struggled to find any true and consistent form during this wet and miserable English summer. Hopefully that has now all changed! Following his 8 wicket demolition of Penkridge last week he produced a stunning all round performance against Coleshill at Church Road to catapult Manor back into the promotion race. The visitors must have been congratulating themselves on their decision to bat first as they reached 141-1 at the drinks break with Pete Magafas (80) and David Brown (69) looking comfortable at the crease. The game took a significant turn when a brilliant piece of fielding by Sonkar ran out Magafas, and the Indian also held two catches and grabbed 3-63 as the hosts fought back superbly to restrict their opponents to 241-8 from 55 overs on an excellent batting track. Arfan Khan 3-57 also impressed with the ball as did the overall team spirit and commitment of the players.

In reply Darren Baker (54) applied himself admirably in a 133 run opening partnership with Sonkar who was majestic in his stroke play as he smashed a superb 134 not out from only 122 balls to treat a large Church Road crowd to some great entertainment. With support from Nabeel Asghar (21no) he saw Manor through to a comfortable and vital 8 wicket victory and has hopefully laid the platform for a sustained push for promotion back to Division Two.
