Manor beat Water Orton in final over

1st XI Birmingham League Division Two
Aston Manor 227-6
Water Orton 158 all out

Aston Manor won by 69 runs Manor moved out of the relegation places with a tremendous victory against Water Orton, in front of a large and vociferous crowd at Church Road.

After being asked to bat in a game reduced to 50 overs, Manors total was built around a fine knock of 78 by opener Wajid Hussain. The youngster showed great technique and composure throughout his innings and with fellow opener Nabeel Asghar (28) laid a solid foundation for the hosts. Peter Evans (25) and the unlucky Kyle Schreuder (24) gave the necessary middle order impetus, before some fine late hitting by Arfan Khan (22no) saw Manor close on a competitive 227-6.

15 year old Brinda Phagura (1-25) again showed his outstanding potential with a superb spell of bowling, but it was the experienced Arfan Khan (15-8-19-3) who put the visitors on the back foot as they struggled to cope with his immaculate line and length. With wicket keeper Mickey Bromhall in inspiring form behind the stumps Manor kept up the pressure through South African left arm spinner Kyle Schreuder (14-2-37-4) before they finally secured a well deserved and much needed victory with only two balls remaining.

With the 2nd and 3rd XI teams both beating their Sutton Coldfield counterparts and the 4th XI recording a victory at Southam this weekend will hopefully prove to be the turning point in the fortune of Aston Manor.

The 1st XI are away at Fordhouses next week, and will hope to build on this outstanding performance.
