Manor Beat Ombersley In Low Scoring Match

On a sunny day at Church Road, the home side won the toss and put the opposition into bat on a flat track.

The ground was looking in top shape ahead of this eagerly awaited match against one of the fancied sides in the division. The visitors made steady progress to reach 45-1 before a massive collapse sparked by some fantastic swing and seam bowling by youngster Shozab Haider. Once he had removed the dangerous Catterall with a stunning caught and bowled, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with Haider finishing with figures of 7-48 from 15.5 overs and the visitors bowled out for a measly 85. He bowled in great tandom with overseas star Christi Viljoen, who weighed in with some feisty bowling to take the other 3 wickets for just 32 runs in 16 overs. The two young bowlers are really gelling together as a partnership, and continue to give the Squirrels good starts to build upon in the field.

Manor required only 86 for victory, and to secure the 20 points, however, loyal fans will know that the Squirrels don’t like to do things easily, and after making a solid start reaching 30-2, a nervous collapse was triggered by ex-Worcestershire spinner Matt Rawnsley, who finished with figures of 5-25. Captain Evans dropped himself down to 7 in the hope to shepherd the tail home, and a quick-fire 25 saw the hosts home in 24.1 overs, although not before getting himself caught on the boundary with only 6 more required! It was left to Andy Forman (11*) to hit the winning runs of Brett D’Oliveira’s first ball.

Huge relief and celebrations flowed through the large watching crowd in the sun, as Manor continued to improve as the team is maturing together.
