Manor beat Evesham but remain in relegation battle

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Evesham 192 all out
Aston Manor 167-6
Aston Manor won by 4 wickets (D/L method)

Aston Manor moved out of the relegation places with this victory at Church Road against a spirited Evesham side, but their fate will not be decided until next weeks’ crunch match away at Milford Hall. It will come down to the winners of that match staying up, and the losers going down. Should the weather intervene and the match be abandoned then it is Aston Manor who will survive.

With the possibility of rain later in the day, the hosts opted to bowl first but failed to take advantage of some splendid bowling from Aurell Kirnon (3-24), Nabeel Asghar (3-24) and Armadeep Sonkar (2-26). With the visitors reduced to 136-8 Manor would have hoped to be chasing a target of less than 150, but poor catching enabled Evesham to recover to a more competitive total of 192 before finally being bowled out.

Those extra runs scored soon looked ominous as poor shot selection by Manor’s top order saw them reduced to 43-3 in the face of some fine bowling from Imran Ali. Jake Lee then joined Sonkar at the crease and the two of them set about rebuilding the innings in a sensible fashion. Rain caused Manor to chase a revised total of 166 from 43 overs, but by the time the impressive Lee (23) was dismissed Manor had recovered to 126-4 with victory in sight. Sonkar batted superbly, not giving a chance in his unbeaten innings of 65, to see Manor through to an ultimately comfortable victory to set up next weeks’ nail biting relegation decider.
