Heavy defeat against Penkridge

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Aston Manor 136 all out
Penkridge 137-2
Penkridge won by 8 wickets

Aston Manors poor run of form continued away at Penkridge, where they were well beaten by a very strong home team.

The situation had looked promising for the visitors as a good partnership between Aafan Janjua (44) and Nabeel Asghar (32) gave Manor a solid platform to build from at 73-1. Unfortunately the promise was short lived as both players were then dismissed in successive overs and a too familiar batting collapse followed in the face of some fine bowling by Laeq Chisti (5-61). Manor will be rightly disappointed to have had no fewer than five LBW decisions given against them, but that doesnt hide the fact that there is a lack of confidence with the bat throughout the team which must be addressed to prevent a season of real struggle.

Despite an excellent opening spell from Arfan Khan, the hosts had little problem in chasing down such a modest total for the loss of only two wickets. Both Penkridge opening batsmen, Alex Watson (64) and Ben Holmes (43), impressed before being dismissed late in the innings by Julius Benjamin (2-39).

To lose to such a good side as Penkridge is not a major problem, but the nature of the defeat is. Aston Manor now have a sequence of matches against other teams who are also struggling, and need to kick start their own recovery with victory at Church Road next week against Worcester Nomads.
