Aston Manor Record Losing Draw To Stay Safe

On a cold blustery day, skipper Evans won the toss and ask the hosts to bat, in a game they needed to win. Manor started well with the impressive Haider (3-30) picking up 3 top order wickets. The middle order rallied, and started accumulating runs. Manor handed a debut to youngster Shaun Carroll (0-28), and when bowling in tandem with fellow youth prospect Nabeel Asghar (1-30), Manor had two 15 year olds in the attack together. This was great to see and shows that the production line that has produced current Warwickshire players Chris Woakes and Ateeq Javed shows no signs of letting up, which is a huge credit to the tireless efforts of the youth section.

The partnership between Hudson (35) and Maddox (80) was broken with Evans removing the pair (2-54), before two late wickets from overseas player Christi Viljoen saw the Staffordshire side reach 188-8 off their alloted 55 overs.

With Manor only requiring a losing draw to secure their Division Two status, the skipper asked the openers to be very cautious and ensure we had wickets in hand, with a view for a final push in the second half of the innings to reach the target of 189. This plan was going smoothly with openers Jamiel (22) and Forman (19) occupying the crease, and at 70-1 off 30 overs, Manor were in a great position to push for the 20 points. However, a glut of wickets fell in the middle of the innings to leave Manor precariously on 79-5, before firstly the ageless Ian Hudson, and then Shozab Haider (29*) completed a fine all round display with some assistance from Adam Rana (12*) to see Manor finish on 136-7, and secure the required points to guarentee 2nd division cricket next season.

The final game of the season is on 12 September at Church Road against the already promoted Wombourne CC. I hope to see many supporters there to enjoy the final game and perhaps a few beers afterwards/(during!)
