1sts suffer 2nd defeat on the bounce

Birmingham League Division Three
1st XI
Aston Manor 165-9
Coleshill 166-5

A very disappointing batting performance saw Manor slip to their second successive defeat and now sees them closer to the relegation rather than promotion places.

After being asked to bat by the hosts, Manor made a very solid start through Darren Baker (36), Adeel Khan (27) and Armadeep Sonkar (20). Having reached 85-1 the visitors looked capable of setting their opponents a formidable total, but three quick wickets fell without a further run being added, and although Peter Evans (21) tried to stem the slide, Manor soon found themselves reeling at 123-8. Skipper Jason Furnell (43no) showed the required determination and application for the occasion and along with the defiant Mickey Bromhall ensured Manor batted out their full allocation of  55 overs to finish on a below par but competitive score 165-9. Jason Jordan (5-28) was easily the pick of the Coleshill bowlers.

Manor needed early wickets to put the hosts under pressure, but unfortunately dropped Pete Magafas (57) early in his innings allowing them to slowly build a solid platform and reach 91-1 despite some accurate and searching bowling. To their credit, Manor kept up the pressure to reduce Coleshill to 110-5 to set up a potentially winning position. Arfan Khan (2-34) was particularly impressive receiving good support from Aurell Kirnon (1-17) and Jason Smith (1-17). Unfortunately despite a few close calls the partnership between David Brown (41no) and Daniel Bales (34no) could not be broken and Coleshill were able to complete a 5 wicket victory.

The next couple of matches will be crucial to Manor. A run of victories are needed to propel them back into the promotion race, and to achieve that a much greater level of consistency will be required with the bat.
