1sts finish season with loss at Streetly

1st XI
Birmingham League Division Three
Streetly 218-9
Aston Manor 160 all out
STREETLY WON BY 58 RUNS

Manor’s season ended in defeat in a match at Briar Avenue that definitely had an end of season feel about it.

Overnight rain meant a delayed start in a match reduced to 34 overs per side which allowed Manor’s large following of supporters more time to become acquainted with the hosts bar facilities and therefore crank up the noise levels for when proceedings did get underway.

Unfortunately Manor’s bowlers also appeared in party mode as the Streetly batsmen climbed into some very disappointing bowling to amass 218-9 from their allocation. One bowler who was at his best though was yet again left arm spinner James Harris who finished with 3-27 from his 7 overs. Although expensive, his spin partner Shaun Findlay also posed a threat finishing with 3-50 but the rest of the Manor bowlers did not have one of their better days. They were not helped either by some poor catching by a team that definitely looked ready for the end of the season.

Any hope of Manor chasing down this total was blown away by some good early bowling from Matt Bates (3-18) which saw the visitors top order blown away before they could get going. Rahul Bakshi (57) and Adam Breakspear (39- including 5 sixes) briefly threatened a revival but South African Dewald Joubert (4-33) ran through the tail to dismiss Manor for 160.

The main concern of the visitors appeared to be whether their excellent overseas player, Rahul Bakshi, could reach 1,000 league runs for the season. Already the leading run scorer in Division Three, Bakshi fell agonisingly one run short on 999 runs with an average of 50. For a player who has scored so many runs it was amazing the one six he did hit in this innings was the only six he hit all season! A wonderful player and person, and Manor are delighted to confirm that he will be returning to Church Road for the 2016 season.
