1st Come Off Second Best In Low Scoring Affair

1st XI Birmingham League Division Two
Water Orton 71 all out
Aston Manor 62 all out

Aston Manor missed another opportunity to move away from the relegation zone as they slipped to a hugely disappointing defeat away at Water Orton in a low scoring game played on a sub standard wicket.

After some wayward cricket in the first two overs had seen the home side accumulate 18 vital runs, Manors seam attack of Arfan Khan (5-25), Ryan van Nierkerk (3-16) and Shozab Haider sponsored by ODC Future Thinking (2-19) took control, and with some fine accurate bowling saw the hosts reduced to 71 all out.

The umpires decided not to apply the ruling restricting the number of overs bowled by young players due to the tea interval and Warwickshire U19 bowler Michael Bevan (7-16) took full advantage of their leniency with a superb spell of bowling which destroyed Manors batting and left them agonisingly 9 runs short of a vital win. Most batsmen had problems with the amount of lift the tall Bevan achieved from a good length, but the key wicket of Van Nierkerk, out LBW for 18, came from a short pitched ball which hit the batsman at ankle height in front of the stumps.

Manor will have use of a much better surface next week at Church Road as they entertain fellow relegation candidates St Georges in another vital game.
